[ We hope that this information being in one place can help those that need the information for having a wonderful cruise on board a Holland America Line ship. From finding a  Handicapped Stateroom, deciding if they are adequate, whether or not furniture might have to be moved around or even completely removed by a Stateroom Attendant. And for those who were placed in a Handicapped Stateroom via a GUARANTEE booking, whether or not the room will cause any differences to you that matters (for example the lack of a couch might be an issue to some when it comes to eating. It's little things such as these which will make your cruise so much better:-) We are also including what we feel is important information for the handicapped cruiser and those cruising with them. The cabin was large, plenty of room and the bathroom was placed beside, or next from the cabin. It was a handicapted room. We had booked a GTY H and where placed in this cabin, Which was very nice.
The only unpleasant thing was the noise from the engines and the maintenance room behind and beneath us. Photos May 2011

The room was TINY, no sofa, no table, small desk, 3 small wardrobes instead of 4.  Narrower than normal cabin (no room to talk along one side of the queen bed). The bathroom was HUGE, with a Giant Door that took up all the floor space when opened.  The bathroom had a huge shower, no bath tub.  No shelf under the sink, no step up into the bathroom.  Instead, there was a special drain just inside the bathroom in front of the door.

Also, the air conditioning vent was inside the bathroom! We had to prop the giant door open to get AC!

Upon entering the cabin, we were immediately disappointed. This room is the furthest forward (nearest the bow) of any room on the ship. The bulkhead curves inward very sharply. This causes a gap of 3 to 4 feet from the end of the room to the portholes and removes this amount of floor space from the main cabin. This means the room has no sofa, a shorter-than-normal desk with no stool, no privacy curtain across the foot of the bed, no table, and 3 small wardrobes instead of 4 (which all or most INSIDE ROOMS DO HAVE. It is also narrower than the other cabins and only had one small dresser next to the queen sized bed instead of two and there was insufficient space to walk on the other side of the bed. I measured the room and found the cabin to be about 117 square feet including the storage spaces and desk, and the bathroom to be about 48 square feet. The whole cabin is at most 165 square feet (much smaller than the less-expensive inside rooms).

The portholes are there but largely unusable due to the 3 to 4 foot bulkhead separation from the end of the cabin. You cannot get near the glass. It looks like two beady eyes looking out of the ship and no good view is to be had at all.

Since it is a handicapped cabin, it has very wide doors to allow for a wheelchair. This means that the small floor space available in the middle of the cabin was virtually wiped out by the very wide door to the bathroom. The bathroom is huge. It has an enormous shower and no tub. It is also missing the usual shelf under the sink. A LOT of the cabin space ended up as the bathroom.

Because this room was very far forward, it magnified the effects of the waves. Unfortunately for us, when we left Sydney Harbor, we were greeted by "Very Rough Seas" of 12-18 feet. I had never been seasick before but I was EXTREMELY seasick that night.

This is a great room if there are no high seas, there is only one person occupying the room—if you pay the inside room rate (less cabin, but some light).

Hope this helps folks from getting a rude surprise!  Also a “heads up” for those selecting a “guarantee.”
