On Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Westerdam, Oosterdam,
Prinsendam, Zuiderdam: Every single Stateroom has a cooler (HAL does not
like to use the word refrigerator as they don't get as cool as some medicines
that require "refrigeration" need... but they will get beverages cold...)

On the rest of the HAL fleet (and note the above says NIEUW
AMSTERDAM... NOT Amsterdam ) If it has a verandah, it has a cooler!

I wasn’t sure we would ever be lucky enough to stay in a Holland
America Penthouse Suite. We had been used to S, SA or SB and had
been invited to a wine tasting party on the Oosterdam Penthouse suite (Thanks
CC Iceman) a few years back. The Penthouse on the smaller ships are
a bit different but just as fabulous as you can see.
I took pictures before the suite looked lived in even though we try
very hard to keep things neat and tidy while traveling.
We, and both of our moms sailed on the May 8th Veendam cruise to
Bermuda. We booked PS001 and it worked out perfectly for the four
of us. My mother is 90 and needs a bit of help from me at this point
in her life, so two rooms would not have worked out very well for us.
It also turned out two “S” were slightly more than the PS.
There were no lines for Suite check in and we were on the ship just
before noon. We hadn’t been on a non-Vista class ship for sometime
and I was a bit confused as our normal stop on Deck 7 was now Deck 10.
We stepped off the elevator and were met there by Anna, one of the concierges
from the Neptune Lounge; she greeted us by name and escorted us to PS001.
I was in total shock she met us at the elevator lobby, but she continued
to amaze me all week.
Before sailing I had heard lots of reports of smells, toilet issues
and AC issues. I can report I didn’t smell anything unpleasant.
We did have 3 toilet problems. The first neither toilet would flush
and were not clogged – they resolved themselves on their own. The
2nd was a clog one toilet and required maintenance. The 3rd was one
toilet in the big bath room – no clog but would not flush. I let
the room steward know and later that day he said to push the button harder.
Now on to AC issues – we did have issues it was so cold in the room for
the first 2 days. Finally ask them to check it out and they took
down a ceiling tile and played with something in the ceiling and then we
could regulate the temperature much better.
One word to describe it – AMAZING!!! If you ever have the opportunity
to sail in a PS you should do it. Photos May 2011

We had a deluxe verandah suite and it was heavenly! Why did I
love it? Let me count the ways?. The cabin itself was enormous with so
much storage that we couldnt fill it even with three of us in the
cabin. Theres a wrap-around dresser with 12 drawers, two bedside
tables (one with lockable drawers), a cabinet under the TV that holds the
DVD player and safe, and a corner cabinet.
The dressing room has a closet with three sections, two of which can
be set up with one bar only or top and bottom bars. They have upper shelves,
but thats where the life-vests were stored. All the doors are mirrored.
Also in the dressing room is a granite-topped make-up area with a tiny
sink, adjustable magnifying mirror and three drawers. A full-sized hair
dryer was in one of the drawers and there is a handy outlet as well. The
top of the little padded stool pops off and there is storage inside there
as well, though 1) Im not sure what youd put there and 2) youd likely forget
whatever you put there. The bathroom proper had little storage just
a shelf under the sink but certainly served its purpose and had a
separate door so one person can use the bathroom while the other is in
the dressing room and everyone has privacy. (Theres a curtain between the
main part of the cabin and the dressing room/bath area.) I just used
the shower, not the tub, but the water pressure was great and the temperature
control was excellent. The toilets were one of the few signs of aging
that I noticed? they werent particularly good at flushing and from the
number of out of order signs on stalls throughout the ship, this is a ship-wide
issue. For the in-cabin flush, adding a glass of water before hitting
the flusher button helps a lot!
As you come into the main cabin from the hall, theres a coat closet
that also contains a basket to set out your shoes for polishing, the laundry
bags and a couple of umbrellas. Next to that is a bar area that not
only contains a stocked mini bar (at your expense) but also has a corner
cabinet with wine storage unit!! I think it has room for 5 bottles
standing upright. Hidden in the mirrors above the bar is a small cabinet
that is stocked with barware? red wine, white wine and champagne glasses.
The counter has a tray with water (one bottle is a free gift and
labeled as such the others are to purchase) an ice bucket and wire
basket of fruit. I am pretty sure there was a wine bucket as well, although
we might have requested that.
Finally, next to the couch, there is another small storage unit that
has blankets to use on the balcony if there is a chill. Which brings
me to the balcony?. WOW. It was gigantic. Furnished with four faux-wicker
club style chairs, a round table for meals, two loungers with cushions
and adjustable backs and a small drinks table. We spend so much quality
time out there! The balcony doors are French-door style and although
both can open, we mostly used just one. I was concerned that they
would be difficult to open, but they were fine.
The perks that came with the deluxe suite category seemed to be never-ending.
There was champagne waiting when we got to our cabin and from that time
on, the surprises seemed to just keep on coming for the rest of the trip.
We particularly enjoyed the cocktail reception in the Crows Nest where
we got to chat with the Captain and crew. Normally, I have limited interest
in (or tolerance to) the Cruise Director. Overall they seem like
a rather loudmouthed bunch, but we had the pleasure of meeting and chatting
with Simon Relph at this party and we all three just adored him.
This might be time to tell you a little more about our little traveling
group. Our group was my mother age 89 my sister and myself.
I think weve each been on about 6 cruises (mostly with the extended family)
and weve cruised on Royal Caribbean, Princess and Celebrity (though that
was on the Xpedition which is only 100 pax so its a whole other experience).
My mom has some mobility issues which is one of the reasons we opted for
the Deluxe Suite? she tends to spend a lot of time in the cabin these days
and we thought shed enjoy the larger balcony. . (IRL_Joanie's
Note: Please do not leave the Verandah/Balcony doors open!!! Keeping
the doors open causes problems in other staterooms with Air Conditioning.)
What we hadn't thought of though was the impact of the Neptune Lounge
and the concierge service? and that is what truly spoiled us for anything
else. Both were wonderful for a whole host of reasons, particularly
the easy access to coffee and snacks, but Abigail and Jennifer, the concierges,
were the best? both were cute, sweet, friendly, unflappable and always
there for the passengers. My sister and I felt comfortable leaving
mom alone on the ship, knowing that Abigail and Jennifer would watch out
for her.
Sitting area... leather couch looks good, but not terribly comfortable
for sitting or sleeping. Chairs were very comfy. Little bowl of floating
flowers on coffee table. Invites were waiting for us along with three sets
of personalized stationary. This was one of our favorite towel animals...
you can see the corner of the fold out couch 'bed' at the top. Gives
you a sense of how thin and mis-shapen the mattress was. The uncomfortable
sofabed was probably our only real complaint. I think it might have
been better if I'd thought to ask for an eggcrate topper earlier on.
