We hope that this information being in one place can help those that need the information for having a wonderful cruise on board a Holland America Line ship. From finding a  Handicapped Stateroom, deciding if they are adequate, whether or not furniture might have to be moved around or even completely removed by a Stateroom Attendant. And for those who were placed in a Handicapped Stateroom via a GUARANTEE booking, whether or not the room will cause any differences to you that matters (for example the lack of a couch might be an issue to some when it comes to eating. It's little things such as these which will make your cruise so much better:-)
[
We are also including what we feel is important information for the handicapped cruiser and those cruising with them. (See Handicapped Information link at the bottom of this page)

On Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Westerdam, Oosterdam, Prinsendam, Zuiderdam: Every single Stateroom has a cooler (HAL does not like to use the word refrigerator as they don't get as cool as some medicines that require "refrigeration" need... but they will get beverages cold...)
[
On the rest of the HAL fleet (and note the above says NIEUW AMSTERDAM... NOT  Amsterdam ) If it has a verandah, it has a cooler!

[
IRL_Joanie's Note: The standard Verandah/Balcony is 6 feet deep by 9 feet wide. VA aft/stern Verandah/Balcony are deeper (how much depends on which deck, and Vista class versus Signature class). VD are 7.5 feet deep. VF and VE on Vista Class ships, Noordam, Oosterdam, Westerdam and Zuiderdam, Verandah deck are only 4.5 feet deep. As of this time I do not have information on the Verandah/Balcony sizes of the PS, SA, SB, SC or SY categories Staterooms.

Room 5002 is a VF category room, which means it's unlikely you can choose it, it is allocated to you. It's an accessible room although we were both able bodied -  one of our friends on this cruise was wheelchair bound and thought the space we had, compared to his accessible room on level 4, was fantastic. We were able to fit 12 people in our room on an evening for pre-dinner drinks, and the deck/balcony area was fabulous. We did however note that although our room had access to extra decking adjacent to the foredeck, suite 5001 on the other side did not, their door was locked.
It was quiet, engine noise was barely noticeable and because we were at the end of the corridor, no-one disturbed us by walking past at night-time.

Only one hand basin and a wet floor shower area as well as a shower over bath. Storage was more than adequate - plenty of drawers and space in the closets.
Please let me know if you want clarification on the photos - but I've included a range showing room and bathroom as well as the deck and adjacent foredeck (which was closed to the public - only opened for the Straits of Messina, and entering Venice. We had an extra window looking towards the front of the ship as well as our balcony doors, so a light and bright room. Photos September 2011

HC accessible bathroom, cabin 5051.  On the floor there were 2 drain systems, one in front of the bathroom door and one running perpendicular to that one, between the shower and toilet. Drain system for the roll in shower.  Caused us no issues really.  Occassionally there was some water that escaped the drain area, but it wasn't anything a single towel couldn't deal with easily. HC accessible roll in shower with seat.  Obviously we did not need this, but i did try out the seat once while shaving since it was there.  On the wall are dispensers for Elemis Shampoo, conditioner and body wash. As you can see there are no shelves under the sink for storage.  The bathroom had no storage aside from the side shelves, due to the HC nature.

HC cabin has 1 chair at the table but they will bring you a second chair on request if needed.

Thermostat is located on the wall, next to the bathroom door in our cabin.  Red is hot and blue is cold.  We kept it midway through the blue area and the cabin was quite cold that way.  (63-66 degrees according to my travel clock haha). Key card near the front door that enables you to turn on your lights.  You are able to slide in 2 at once and pull the other out, should you ever want to switch the card in the slot without having everything turn off, fyi.

Bedside amps by the bed for reading in bed without all cabin lights on.  These were able to be on without the card being in the door, as they were on each night when we arrived "home".  All the switches below are just switches, no outlets.

2 closets in our cabin.  The one on the right contained the safe.  Our main issue with the closets was the fact that no area was long enough for our formal wear.  Not sure if these closets were different though due to the HC nature of the cabin.

Desk/chiller area. Also you'll see there's a lighted makeup mirror there too.  Magnifies all your flaws very nicely! The ottoman also had storage inside it. Also the lid could be used to lean on in bed for writing/eating if you wanted. Each bedside table had 2 drawers (one locking) and the bed had 2 drawers below it.  There was also ample room for our large luggage under the bed. Plugs located at the desk.  These were the only available plugs in the bedroom area of the cabin, one plug was in the bathroom.

TV is on the wall across from the bed.  Pretty useless as it didn't get many channels, however good for watching the excursion talks over and over again.

Waste bins had 2 areas, one for regular trash and one for recycleable paper.

Verandah has a built in ramp for access to the verandah and stateroom.

Lifeboats were 1 level below us view wise.  They posed no issue for our visibility.  2 of the photos are views of the verandahs below ours, so, Deck 4, probably 4051 and 4049? In the last 2 photos you can see, the panels open between the verandah staterooms, but they are locked unless you ask for them to be opened. Photos October 2010

I just received more photos from HALs Access & Compliance for cabins 6001 and 6002 (IRL_Joanie's Note: VA 6002 is the exact duplicate of VA 6001) on the Nieuw Amsterdam.  Well, it appears that in the new design for the Nieuw Amsterdam, they removed the sofa bed and replaced it with a chair.  Also, there is a very large "pole" in the cabin which probably was the reason why they changed the layout of these cabins in comparison  to the sister ship Eurodam.  Every now and then I have to question the thinking of architects -- they put a handicapped-accessible cabin at the front of the ship, which experiences the most motion and is furthest away from the elevators and they put a pole in the middle of the cabin for wheelchairs and scooters to maneuver around -- go figure! Stateroom Observations: The suite was beautiful and we really needed all the accessible features, but they didn't make it any larger than standard SA. And it seemed quite a bit smaller than our non accessible suite on Veendam.  Enough that we originally thought we paid SA prices for SB size.  I was getting myself quite worked up for a conversation about compensation when...I counted off the balcony glass panels on the suite next door and came to the conclusion that the suites were just a little smaller in the NA. Also that's when we realized the bed configuration must be different. With the beds turned the other way, you have a lot more room in the seating area, but you could never access the long bank of storage where the TV is and I think you'd have to crawl in bed from the foot. I haven't looked back at my old pix to compare though. As you come into room. Beds were oriented differently than on standard SA on Veendam. Otherwise you couldn't have accessed storage or side of bed. This made the cabin feel smaller.
[
Note that the couch is straight as opposed to the suite standard semi L shape. It flipped over rather than pulling out which made it possible to get to the bathroom with the walker. Also much more comfortable for both sitting and sleeping.
[
Entry hall and closets. Bathroom entrance opposite the closets. We got a doorstop from steward which made it easier to maneuver. Two peepholes one standard height other at wheelchair height. Vanity area. 3 closets opposite.
[
Bathroom Observations: My mom's circumstances are different than someone who is younger and/or in better health so a younger person might have different needs/concerns. For example, she would have preferred an even higher toilet because she is so weak (though she did manage once she got used to it. The grab bars were on her weaker side too. I think we'd have been better on the opposite side of the ship). No storage underneath (Bathroom Sink). There was a removable footrest sort of thing (small steps-tool?) that we never could figure out. Towels were in a side alcove. Note emergency pull cord. Also in shower. For able bodied, shower in tub is not high enough in stationary position. Had to be used hand held. I mostly showered in spa. Tub is very high sided. (I was glad for handrails!) Also, not jetted like I think it is in standard NA suites.
[
Note the elevator and the bend in the balcony to accommodate it. The cabin next door had a double lounger, one of the chairs with the footrest and a table for four plus a side table.  We had two of the chairs with footrests, table for four and side table. When we had it arranged for easy access, it felt a little cramped. There are ramps on both sides. The cabin side is carpet covered, the outside is wood. Door was difficult for mom to manage. We were afraid for her to attempt to go in or out without assistance.
[
Overall Observations: Suite is next to glass elevators which adds convenience at the price of almost all privacy on balcony. Also some balcony space is sacrificed. Suite does not appear to be larger than a standard SA and space was a little tight with the wheelchair. Mom can walk some so we could use walker in the cabin which was a very good thing.  I'm not sure how accessible the balcony would really be.  The door seemed narrow and you'd probably have to have the steward eliminate some furniture.  The standard SA on NA seems significantly smaller than on the Veendam and we rely felt it. More to come. (This Stateroom is  located next to the mid ship glass elevators.) Photos February 2012

Here is a quick video of our cabin aboard the Holland America Nieuw Amsterdam cruise ship. It is a handicapped cabin and so is a bit larger, has a wonderful, three angled balcony view, and a large, walk-in shower. Video taken February 2011

To make the pages less graphic intensive, I've divided the ship photos into 3 separate pages, the 1st is the Staterooms themselves, the 2nd is Miscellaneous photos of Public Areas around the ship and the 3rd is the Handicapped (HC) Staterooms on the Nieuw Amsterdam. Click on the links below to see more photos of the Nieuw Amsterdam.
