On Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Westerdam, Oosterdam, Prinsendam, Zuiderdam: Every single Stateroom has a cooler (HAL does not like to use the word refrigerator as they don't get as cool as some medicines that require "refrigeration" need... but they will get beverages cold...)
[
On the rest of the HAL fleet (and note the above says NIEUW AMSTERDAM... NOT  Amsterdam ) If it has a verandah, it has a cooler!

We were very pleased with Eurodam J1021, and would book it again in a flash. Many people shook their heads in horror at the prospect of 4 women sharing one small cabin (and bathroom). In fact, things went pretty smoothly. We've shared rooms many times in the past, and the relative close quarters really weren't a problem. Lots of room in 3 large closets and assorted other storage meant everyone's stuff got stowed with no trouble.
[
Except, when the room was made up at night....
[
With the upper bunk lowered over the two standard beds, there was about 23 inches of clearance above the head of the beds. It became a game of “whack-a-mole”...with us as the moles. Sit up to go to the bathroom? Whack! There was a space a little less that 2 feet/60 cm wide next to the wall which was a “whack free zone” for me, with no bunk overhang. So, I quickly learned the wall was my best friend, and hugged it as I slept. Fewer whacks.
[
One roommate preferred a different strategy. She used what looked like a tai chi crane dance move, as she very slowly unfolded herself from under the bunk. Personally, I can't take a full minute to get out of bed when I need a bathroom, but...whatever works.
[
(Another solution would be to have the bed made up with the foot as the head. However, this gives no headboard to lean against, and orphans the reading light. We're all avid readers in bed, so that wasn't going to happen.)
[
Also – only about 8 inches between foot of the regular bed and edge of the unfolded sofa bed. First night - shimmy out of bed, stretch, then jeté over the sofa bed. I don't know about you, but I don't dance that well at 3 a.m.!
[
(This was solved on subsequent nights by having sofa itself made up as a bed without folding it out. That roommate claimed to prefer it, and none of us could argue her out of it. )
[
If I've made this all sound like it was a cruise ruining deal-breaker...well, it certainly wasn't.  As I said, we'd book the cabin again in a flash.  This main deck J is larger than the balcony cabins (if you don't count the balcony).  Also, the square shape makes for better traffic flow than the long narrow rectangular cabins. However, adults should understand the challenges.  With children, I think it would be less of a deal.
[
Additional room details: cabin is 14 feet wide, 15 feet long = 210 square feet, not 198 as listed on HAL website. Also, in the upper bunk, the distance to ceiling is 29 inches – 6 inches more than lower beds. It also has its own reading light. Photos February 2012

J 1048 Large Interior Stateroom    Deck 1 - Main Deck

LOVED this cabin. Thanks to many on CC, we learned about it and booked it for our trip that we thought might be a bit "rough." (North Atlantic and North Sea). It was perfect. One night the Barf Bags were out and we never had a problem...just nice, lulling seas. Higher up, they had problems!  The layout is so much better than Verandah and Outside cabins. We had a clear view of what was inside our closets, for one thing! Also, the nice couch was actually usable and comfy to sit, lay, read on! The bathroom (which I forgot to photo) had only a shower, but a nice one, and it seemed to me that the vanity area was longer than in the other cabins we've had. It was NOT claustrophobic at all, though yes, we did miss a window...but would book it again in a heartbeat.

The location on the Main Deck (no cabins below) and central but under the Northern Lights nightclub area worried us, but DON'T worry...it was quiet!!!!! Being somewhat between the forward and mid elevators we found we didn't have noisy people in the hallways. It was an easy walk to either elevator which was wonderful. We are early-to-bed and early-to-rise folks and no noise ever disturbed us. The dark cabin was very conducive to a good night's sleep. The bit of glow from the makeup mirror gave enough ambient light to find the bathroom, etc.

Our room stewards were great...never seen, but always on the job...room was done by the time we returned from breakfast or dinner.
Enjoy this room...it's great! The Eurodam is a fantastic ship. Crew was the best we've sailed with. Photos 2010.

J 1068 Large Interior Stateroom    Deck 1 - Main Deck

Stateroom 1068 located on the main deck in the J category. My friend was next room to mine in 1064 which is exactly the same layout, but on the other side. When we first got to our rooms, we were so glad to see the space. It is 200 square feet so it is very spacious for an inside. We were ecstatic and happy also with the closet space! You get a small fridge that is filled with sodas, water and alcohol. I did not use it though. Our happiness deflated on the second night of the cruise when the noise started around 9 o'clock. We cruise mainly to relax and recharge our batteries not to party. If I wanted to party, I would book Carnival for a lot less money! The rooms are located under the Queen's lounge. It is the venue where they host live bands and karaoke! Well...it went on past midnight and we thought that the band was in our room. It was worse in my friend's stateroom than in mine. I did not think that there would be loud shows over staterooms. We complained about it to guest services and I wrote a long letter to Holland when we came back. I still haven't heard from them. If you go to sleep late, or if you are deaf, book those cabins. If you are like me and go to bed early, don't book them! Photos March 2011
