We hope that this information being in one place can help those that need the information for having a wonderful cruise on board a Holland America Line ship. From finding a  Handicapped Stateroom, deciding if they are adequate, whether or not furniture might have to be moved around or even completely removed by a Stateroom Attendant. And for those who were placed in a Handicapped Stateroom via a GUARANTEE booking, whether or not the room will cause any differences to you that matters (for example the lack of a couch might be an issue to some when it comes to eating. It's little things such as these which will make your cruise so much better:-)
[
We are also including what we feel is important information for the handicapped cruiser and those cruising with them. (See Handicapped Information link at the bottom of this page)

On Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Westerdam, Oosterdam, Prinsendam, Zuiderdam: Every single Stateroom has a cooler (HAL does not like to use the word refrigerator as they don't get as cool as some medicines that require "refrigeration" need... but they will get beverages cold...)
[
On the rest of the HAL fleet (and note the above says NIEUW AMSTERDAM... NOT  Amsterdam ) If it has a verandah, it has a cooler!

SB 7058 Deluxe Verandah Suite Stateroom    Deck 7 Navigation Deck (This is a Handicapped Stateroom)
[
Description Only: We were on the Amsterdam in May/June on an Alaskan cruise. We had one of the 2 deluxe suites on the Navigation deck. Loved the Navigator Lounge but those suites do not have what I would call wheelchair accessible bathrooms. The door, once you're in the curtained off dressingroom, to the bathroom opens to a tub on the right and very little room for a standard manual wheelchair to get around the door to the sink, toilet and shower. My husband had to keep picking up the back of my chair to move it to the right until we could, barely, clear the door and get to the 'accessible' part.
[
We're in S7040 this month on the Rotterdam and I am hoping they changed something when they stretched it. Otherwise I'm going to ask if the bathroom door can be removed. Their website's drawing does not show they moved the sink/vanity to between the tub and toilet and then put the roll in shower where the sink was. Both the cabin and bathroom doors are wide enough but you just can't get around the door once you open it in to the bathroom on the Amsterdam. We did love the extra space of the deluxe suite but if the Rotterdam is still the same way after their drydock last year we'd think a bit before sailing HAL again.
[
On the plus side was the absolutely wonderful tender service HAL provided. They would load me and the spouse and another non-walker on one deck and then lower the tender to the normal level using the divits to board everyone else. On return, they reversed the process. I did not miss one port and I am positive in an emergency the HAL crew can get the disabled safely off their ships. Not so sure about our regular line that just plain bans non-walkers from tender ports.  May/June 2011
